Camelback Corridor and Arcadia

With a total resident base exceeding 1.3 million, Phoenix is the sixth most populated city in the U.S. One of its primary advantages is its complexity, as housing options are diverse and generally affordable, the economy is strong and there are many opportunities for all types of recreation, including fine arts, performing arts, professional sports and recreational sports.

Phoenix is comprised of many communities and neighborhoods. As with most big cities, these communities may be those that have been loosely defined by locals or those that have been specifically defined by the city. Phoenix has two types of city-defined areas: voting districts and urban villages. The urban villages have been designated primarily to help the city with planning and each village has its own planning committee that works directly with the City Council.

Camelback East is the urban village that contains the Camelback Corridor and Arcadia communities. The village is surrounded by Scottsdale and the villages of Paradise Valley, Squaw Peak, Biltmore, North Mountain, Alhambra, Encanto and Central City. Camelback East is known for its diverse housing options, well-known landmarks and high-end resorts. Two of the communities that add to the appeal of Camelback East are Arcadia and Biltmore. Both offer impressive housing options and a certain sense of stature within the city. Biltmore residents can walk to many fine dining, shopping and entertainment establishments in the immediate vicinity. Arcadia is located on the border of Phoenix and Scottsdale. The community consists of charming, mid-century homes that have largely been upgraded and modernized.

The job of public schooling in Phoenix is divided up among 30 different school districts that serve different parts of the city. Madison School District is one of these in the Camelback Corridor and Arcadia region. The district operates eight campuses, comprised of four elementary schools, three middle schools and one center for exceptionally gifted students. Camelback High School is within the Phoenix Union High School District, an organization with more than 10 high school campuses. Notably, the community of Arcadia is served by the Scottsdale Unified School District; this is one of the reasons for the high demand for Arcadia homes.

The major natural landmarks of Camelback East are Camelback Mountain and Piestewa/Squaw Peak. Piestewa/Squaw Peak has long been an important part of the Phoenix culture. When the Arizona Biltmore Resort was constructed in the 1920’s, the hotel also built a path to the peak as an amenity for the guests. This demonstrated that even then the peak was a popular regional attraction.

Concern was raised in the 1960s that growing residential development would eventually cover the Phoenix Mountains and Squaw Peak. The city responded by forming the Phoenix Mountains Preserve and the Phoenix Mountains Park and Recreation Area to protect this important natural habitat. Today, Piestawa/Squaw Peak is a very popular destination for hikers, horseback riding, and other types of outdoor explorers and is the largest park within a city in the United States.
